" A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools "

-Douglas Adams

In order to better prepare for the not-to-distant future, simulation provides deeper, more meaningful insights. They are safer and can present difficult or even impossible scenarios that can illicit unique reactions. They encompass endless possibilities, and yet they are precise in their intent. Simulations help usher in a future that is safer, greener, and more fun.

Dream the future. Drive it today.

Make it realistic and immersive...enough.

Simulation should convey a level of realism that is enough to make the scenario believable. If the simulation is too low-fidelity, then the simulator is of little use since a questionnaire could have been used instead. If the simulation is too high-fidelity, then some effort and energy was wasted because the level of detail is rarely, if ever, needed to produce genuine responses. Different studies will require different levels of realism as well. Find the balance in each, generate the environment quickly, and get your results.

Make it green.

Energy efficiency is hard won in engineering vehicles, and the effort will be wasted if the vehicles are not driven as intended. Clever and informative user-interfaces should coach drivers to be greener, while keeping it safe and fun.

Make it safe.

Driving safely and using the available technology effectively requires the driver to know what is happening in the surrounding area. The designs of the experience from the size of the instrument cluster to any warning noises or haptic feedback need to be taken into consideration when forming what can be a life-saving message to the driver.

Make it autonomous.

A driverless future is on its way when humans are going to assume a role of passenger. As the technology evolves, there are still questions about how human and machine will interact with each other. Simulation of these particular scenarios is valuable and pivotal to enhance safety, mitigate anxiety, and prevent boredom.
